Join an API Management team to design secure, scalable cloud platforms and guide architecture decisions across product, engineering, and business teams.

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Solutions Architect with a strong Platform Architecture background to join an API Management environment and drive the evolution of secure, scalable, cloud-based platforms.

This role requires proven experience architecting platforms — not only individual applications or standalone solutions.

You will play a key role in complex legacy-to-cloud transformation initiatives, defining target and transition architectures while maintaining an end-to-end view of the platform ecosystem, including components, integrations and adjacent platforms.

The ideal candidate combines strategic architectural thinking with sufficient technical proximity to implementation, taking architectural ownership while supporting engineering teams and helping resolve complex technical challenges.

Your Responsibilities

• Define and evolve end-to-end platform architectures, including target and transition architectures.
• Lead architectural activities related to complex legacy-to-cloud platform transformations.
• Define API Management architecture, strategy, governance and security standards.
• Translate business strategy and technical requirements into architecture decisions, roadmaps and clear implementation guidance.
• Maintain an end-to-end architectural view across platform components, integrations and adjacent systems.
• Take architectural ownership of the solution throughout its lifecycle.
• Work closely with engineering teams to support implementation and unblock complex technical challenges.
• Guide cloud integrations and technical implementation across teams.
• Define performance, reliability, scalability, security and observability targets.
• Identify and resolve architectural bottlenecks and drive platform improvements through automation.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, business and other architecture teams.
• Evaluate technologies and architectural approaches, with potential involvement in MCP/AI Gateway architecture.

Main Requirements

• Proven experience in Platform Architecture, beyond application architecture or architecture of individual solutions.
• Relevant experience in Solution Architecture, Platform Architecture, API Management, Cloud Engineering, Software Development or Distributed Systems.
• Demonstrated experience leading or contributing to complex legacy-to-cloud platform transformations.
• Experience defining target architectures and transition architectures.
• Strong end-to-end architectural vision covering components, integrations and adjacent platforms.
• Ability to translate strategy and requirements into architectural decisions, roadmaps and actionable implementation guidance.
• Ability to take architectural ownership while remaining sufficiently close to implementation and engineering teams.
• Cloud APIM experience with Azure, AWS, Alibaba Cloud and/or Tencent Cloud.
• Knowledge of API gateways, networking, REST, GraphQL, JSON-RPC and OpenAPI.
• Experience with distributed systems, Docker and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML and SSO.
• Familiarity with IaC, CI/CD, GitOps, DevSecOps, Linux and scripting.
• Strong communication, technical leadership and stakeholder management skills.
• Fluent English.
• Currently based in Portugal and available to work onsite in Porto once per week.

Ideal Profile

A senior architect with a genuine platform mindset, capable of looking beyond individual applications and understanding the complete technology ecosystem.

You should be comfortable defining the future-state architecture of a platform, planning the transition from legacy environments to cloud, making strategic architectural decisions and translating them into practical roadmaps.

At the same time, this is not a purely high-level architecture position. You will remain close enough to implementation to guide engineering teams, resolve architectural challenges and ensure that the delivered solution remains aligned with the defined architecture.
